When to Leave Repairs to the Professionals

When you start having problems with your car, we know what you’re thinking. How much is this going to cost? What is wrong with this damn car? How long is it going to take to get my car working again? We know taking your car to the repair shop is the last thing you want to do, and you might even consider doing the repairs yourself if you can manage. But when is it a good idea to leave repairs to the shops? Not all problems are easily solvable, and that can put you in a difficult situation. We suggest leaving repairs to the professionals if the problem is complicated, expensive tools are needed, you need your car working as soon as possible, or you risk losing your warranty or it covers the bill.

When to Leave Repairs to the Professionals

when to leave repairs to the professionals - transmission repair guyComplicated problem – If you tried to diagnose the problem and you couldn’t find what’s causing the issue, or it turns out to be something BIG, we suggest taking your car in to have it looked at. For services such as checking the transmission fluid, changing the transmission fluid, or fixing leaks, you can easily handle those even without experience with cars. For issues with the torque converter, burnt clutches or broken bands, or any fix that requires you to disassemble the transmission, we suggest going to a repair shop instead. But by all means, if you know what you’re doing and you’ve worked on transmissions before, doing it yourself can save you money as well as the frustration of visiting a shop.

Advanced tools needed – If automotive tools are needed for the job (such as a transmission jack), and either the problem doesn’t occur very often or the cost of specific tools are through the roof, we suggest going to a repair shop instead. It doesn’t make any sense to purchase tools you are only going to use once or twice, so you should opt for DIY jobs if you are going to be doing it frequently (e.g. changing the fluid).

Needed on the road ASAP – If you can’t manage without your car for very long and don’t have any way to get where you need to go daily, in circumstances like these you should bring your car to a repair shop. Don’t try to fix it yourself if you have work or school to go to, and you don’t have anyone that can drive you around temporarily. Repair shops often know what’s wrong with your vehicle’s transmission, and can quickly diagnose what the problem is. If you don’t know much about transmissions, finding the problem can take days, which might be too long for you.

Warranty covers it or you risk voiding it – Leave repairs to the professionals if your warranty covers it, or you risk voiding the warranty. If your car’s warranty covers the fix, why wouldn’t you take advantage of it? It makes sense to us! Also, if you already have a warranty on your car, and tampering with your car voids it, we recommend you don’t try to fix your car by yourself.
